Sindh govt plans two SEZs in Karachi

Sindh government is actively working on the development of two Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Karachi, aimed at attracting Chinese investors and fostering industrial growth in collaboration with local businessmen.

Sindh’s Minister for Energy, Planning, and Development, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, revealed these plans during a speech at the Beauty, Fitness, and Consumer Health International Expo at the Expo Centre.

Shah highlighted that Karachi, Pakistan’s commercial hub, is witnessing an industrial boom due to shifts in global trade policies, especially concerning China.

“We believe that Pakistani businessmen are eager to collaborate with their Chinese counterparts to attract investment and boost exports under the ‘Made-in-Pakistan’ brand,” Shah said.

He also pointed out that many countries are planning to end direct imports from China, but Pakistani businesses could still benefit from indirectly importing Chinese products, which will position Pakistan as a key player in international trade.

To support this initiative, the Sindh government is focused on upgrading the infrastructure of existing industrial zones in Karachi.

Shah stressed that these zones are being granted financial and administrative autonomy to ensure sustainable growth.

In another significant development, Shah announced a breakthrough in the power sector, revealing that the Sindh government had secured approval for a remarkably low tariff of 3.5 cents per unit for a planned solar park. This will provide affordable electricity to Karachi and surrounding regions, benefiting both industrialists and the general public.

The ongoing Expo, organized by Ecommerce Gateway’s Mohammad Uzair Nizam, is another testament to Pakistan’s growing commercial influence.

The event, featuring over 2,000 international brands and 350 companies from seven countries, including China, the US, South Korea, Iran, Turkey, and Indonesia, is expected to generate up to $20 million in revenue through service exports, business deals, and tourism-related activities.
