Sindh introduces new vehicle fitness certificates, SOPs

Sindh government has announced the introduction of new Motor Vehicle Fitness Certificates (MVFCs) with modern security features, including barcodes.

The Department of Transport and Mass Transit announced the new MVFCs effective from December 1, 2024, which aimed to enhance vehicle fitness, ensure road safety, reduce environmental pollution, and prevent the issuance of fake certificates, while boosting government revenue.

Sharjeel Inam Memon, Minister for Transport, stated that detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been issued for Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) across Sindh.

The SOPs must be strictly followed to ensure uniformity and accountability in issuing the new certificates.

Additionally, a central database of fitness certificates will be maintained through an Android application, with support from law enforcement agencies, including traffic police and district SSPs, as well as highway and motorway police.

The Transport Department will soon announce the cut-off date for the new certificates, after which all old fitness certificates will be invalid.

Memon asserted that a public awareness campaign will be launched through print and electronic media, and meetings will be held with transport associations to ensure widespread compliance.

To facilitate the new system, designated spaces for vehicle inspections will be set up in Saeedabad, Malir, and Keamari in Karachi, with similar arrangements in other districts.

Karachi will be divided into two zones, East and West, with a focal person overseeing operations and submitting monthly progress reports to the department.

Meanwhile, regular snap checks will be conducted, and disciplinary actions will be taken against inspectors issuing fake certificates.
