Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, has announced a crackdown on the sale of non-standard LPG cylinders in the port city.
The decision was made during a meeting attended by Deputy Commissioners, Additional Commissioner Ghazandar Ali Shah, Assistant Commissioner Headquarters Rabia Syed, as well as representatives from OGRA, Civil Defense, SSGC, the Fire Brigade, and police officials.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioners briefed the attendees on the actions taken against the illegal sale of LPG and cylinders in their respective districts.
The meeting revealed that over 3,000 shops across Karachi are selling LPG cylinders without adhering to legal and safety standards.
To address the issue, all shopkeepers have been given a 15-day deadline to comply with safety regulations otherwise the shops found non-compliant to the rules will be sealed after the deadline.
Meanwhile, it was decided during the meeting that a total of 300 previously shut shops will be allowed to reopen if they meet the required standards by Friday.
Commissioner Naqvi stressed that all the LPG shops located in the residential areas are unsafe and illegal, and will be shut down immediately.
It is to be mentioned here that the Sindh government initiated a crackdown against the illegal Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shops in Karachi, aiming to prevent gas cylinder blasts.
Following a cylinder explosion in Hyderabad in June, the Sindh government took significant steps to regulate LNG and LPG operations across the province.
Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar directed all deputy commissioners to inspect LNG and LPG shops, confiscate substandard gas cylinders, and ensure shops operate according to strict safety protocols.
The government made weekly inspection reports mandatory, and relocate the shops markets and residential areas.
