In response to the call by Hassan Bilal Hashmi, President of Islami Jamiat Talaba Pakistan, protests and rallies were organized across Karachi.
The students held the protest today in seven locations across Karachi, including the University of Karachi, Swedish Institute Landhi, GCT College Site, Urdu University Gulshan Campus, and Urdu University Abdul Haq Campus.
According to Hafiz Abush Siddiqui, Nazim of Islami Jamiat Talaba Karachi, today’s protests and rallies aim to convey a message that students’ fundamental right to elect their representatives through student union elections should be respected.
“The student community demands immediate elections for the student union. If this right is denied, peaceful protests and rallies will continue, culminating in a collective demonstration outside the offices of the Chief Minister of Sindh, Governor of Sindh, and Education Minister,” Siddiqui stated.
Currently, teachers and non-teaching staff in educational institutions have elected unions, but students are being denied this right despite the announcement of student union restoration.
A day earlier, Hashmi criticized the government at a press conference for not implementing the Supreme Court’s decision to revive student unions, terming the delay “worrisome.”
Hashmi stated that student unions are essential for nurturing national leadership and vowed to ensure students’ rights.
He announced that protests and rallies will be organized in educational institutions across the country, with the main rally at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, led by himself.
