Over 16,000 mobile phones stolen in Karachi in past 10 months

The data released by the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) showed more than 16,000 cell phones were stolen in Karachi during the past 10 months of the current year.

The CPLC has released official data on the crime situation in Karachi, which indicated that from January 2024 till October 31, more than 62,000 crime incidents were reported in the port city.

The statistics in the official report revealed that a total of 16,777 mobile phones were stolen from citizens, while over 39,000 citizens were ripped off by their motorbikes. Moreover, 1,489 cases of car theft were reported.

During the same time period, a total of 19 cases of kidnapping for ransom and 80 extortion incidents were recorded.

Tragically, 478 individuals lost their lives in various incidents, including 105 citizens who were killed while resisting robberies, and 11 police personnel were martyred.

Last year, Additional IG Karachi, Khadim Hussain Rind, claimed a drop in Karachi’s crime rate following the expulsion of illegal immigrants, including Afghans, from the city.

The CPLC, a unique public-private initiative formed by the Sindh Government in 1990, aims to enhance security and address the law and order situation in partnership with law enforcement agencies.

Headquartered within the Sindh Governor’s House, it operates eight zonal offices in Karachi and has additional district offices in Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, and Jamshoro.

The organization remains committed to improving safety and serving the public across Sindh.

Earlier to this, it was reported that citizens reported the theft of 50 motorcycles and cars within the last 24 hours, while Sindh police failed to control street crimes in Karachi.

Among the incidents, three motorcycles were taken at gunpoint, while 45 motorcycles were stolen, along with two cars parked outside the residences of the victims.

The thefts occurred across various police jurisdictions, with incidents of motorcycle theft primarily reported from Shah Latif Town, Sukhan, and Sachal police stations, meanwhile, the car thefts were notably reported from Gulshan-e-Maymar and Gulistan-e-Johar areas of Karachi.
