Karachi residents grapple with 16-hour power outages

From the past 16 hours, the residents of Karachi are grappling with power and water outages, leaving the citizens of different parts sweltering in intense heat.

Under the pretext of maintenance, the residents of areas like Shah Faisal Colony, Model Colony, and Malir have faced power cuts since early morning which led to the severe water shortages.

The local residents of the area claimed that the power outage, initially due to faults and ongoing maintenance, stretched far beyond expectations, with no electricity restoration even by midnight.

It is worth mentioning here that the power and water crisis has sparked protests across Karachi.

Two days ago, the citizens after staging protest resorted to stone-pelting at a K-Electric office near Garden police headquarters, causing road closures between the Garden and MA Jinnah Road.

Another protest erupted near Askari Park and the Old Sabzi Mandi area which disrupts traffic from University Road and Jail Chowrangi to Hasan Square.

As these protests grow, residents demand reliable electricity and water services, calling for immediate action to end Karachi’s ongoing crisis.

Earlier in the day, the consumers of K-Electric is likely to face a surge in their monthly electricity bills as the company announced an adjustment of Rs 2.17 per unit for the month of November.

This adjustment of Rs 2.17 will be an addition to the existing rate of Rs 3.17 per unit, making a total price of Rs 4.91 per unit for the citizens of Karachi.

Meanwhile, the power utility also announced a quarterly adjustment of Rs 1.74 per unit, which will be charged separately.

The quarterly adjustment is the part of the tariff adjustment mechanics, proposes to pass on the fuel price variation to the power consumers.
