Sindh Environmental Protection Agency jumped to action and 100 kilns were closed off in Surjani Town. The team also raided the markets of FB Area and Karimabad to confiscate illegal plastic bags.
The raid was conducted in accordance with the orders issued by Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Law, Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Murtaza Wahab. The anti-pollution raids took place in West and Central districts on Thursday.
According to a statement issued, the SEPA team, led by Acting Director Waris Ali Gabol, found 100 illegal kilns functioning in Old Cattle Colony, Surjani Town. The agency claimed to have closed off these kilns in the West District.
The kilns were beings used to recycle old batteries where the objects were melted without practising any safety measures to control emissions, this illegal recycling was creating hazardous environment for the residents nearby.
These setups had not obtained any authorisation certificate and were not practicing proper disposal of waste techniques.
It is pertinent to note that the law prohibits unauthorised recycling of any products.
Moreover, another anti pollution raid took place in FB Area and Karimabad led by In-Charge Kamran Khan of Central district. Numerous plastic bags were confiscated from the local shopkeepers. Usage of plastic bags is illegal across Sindh and shopkeepers have been advised to switch to other environmentally friendly items.
