Despite the import of onions from Iran, the country’s onion prices are out of control. In Karachi, the price of onions per kilogramme has risen to Rs 200.
After the import of onion from Iran was opened in the country, the price fall proved to be transitory, and onion completed the double century of prices within a few weeks.
In thrift markets, one onion costs more than 150 rupees, but a half-kilo of onion costs 100 rupees in Karachi’s regular markets.
According to traders, the amount of onion arriving from Iran is so minimal that it is difficult to alter market pricing.
Traders also said that the second reason for the high price is the decrease in quality and taste of Iranian onions, due to which the price of Pakistani onions is constantly skyrocketing.
In addition, the supply of Pakistani onions has become very limited in the market due to floods.
