Dr. Mehrub Moiz, a transgender individual, has been appointed as Secretary for Transgender Rights in the central cabinet of Awami National Party in Pakistan. This marks the first instance of a transgender person holding such a position in the country’s political landscape.
Dr. Mehrub Moiz holds a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Washington, USA, and obtained an MBBS degree from Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. They are currently serving as the Director of Policy and Gender at Gender Interactive Alliance.
Expressing optimism about their new role, Dr. Mehrub Moiz highlighted the support received from their parents and emphasized their commitment to advancing the rights of the transgender community. They chose to join the Awami National Party (ANP) due to its stance on equal rights and progressive values.
