Karachi’s 129km coastline is fast being turned into a dead zone due to plastic waste and untreated dirty water of industrial units, dirty oil dumped from ships and litter on the coast.
Due to the pollution, the seawater from Kemari to Manora has turned black and severe damage has been caused to mangrove forests. More than 27 species of fish, crabs and prawns have become extinct in the region because of this situation.
The extinction of fish within 10 nautical miles of the sea has raised the risk of affecting 2 million people associated with the fishing industry. 27 species of fish within 10 nautical miles from the coast and the supply of about 10 other species has become dangerously low, they have either become extinct or migrated into deep water.
Sewage water is flowing into the sea daily and toxic water of more than 775 factories is also being discharged into the sea. In addition, soot coal coming from the KPT berth is polluting the seawater via air pollution.
Foreign ships and hundreds of launches are also dumping their used oil into the sea.
