Karachi experienced its first monsoon of 2021 and here’s what happened on Twitter

July 12 marked the opening of the monsoon season in Karachi. Starting in the early hours of Monday, intermittent showers graced the metropolitan’s skies throughout the day.

As soon as the first few drops of rain fell in there city, citizens started complaining about the lack of electricity in their areas. Of course there were memes — both old and new — that floated around. Surprisingly, a couple of people praised K Electric for no disruptions in the power supply in their area.

Journalist Shahzaib Jillani said: “On the first day of monsoon rains in Karachi, my electricity supply has remained unaffected! In the spirit of +ve reporting, Thank you @KElectricPk kehna banta hai.”

PPP’s Murtaza Wahab, who may soon take up the position of Administrator Karachi, used the microblogging site to post rain-related updates.

“Water has gathered around the road along BBQ Tonight. DMC South team has been mobilised to clear the water. Insha’Allah in an hours time water will be cleared,” Wahab said in one of his tweets.

Citizens, as usual, painted a different picture of the situation by sharing photos and videos of traffic jam due to water accumulated on the roads. Others, still, posted reminders to care for sacrificial animals and to ensure their safety.

Mian Omar posted this pertinent reminder with a couple of photos of traffic police officials: “Hats off to Karachi Traffic Police for their exceptional devotion towards duty in #KarachiRain.”

Then, of course there were those who did not seem to be troubled by the rain at all, and took to posting aesthetically pleasing photos.

Overall, reports from the city suggest that the rain did not cause too much damage. However, this was the first of many such showers and the true extent of the work  — which the government insists has been done in preparation for the monsoon season — can only be judged once the season is in full swing.
