Karachi administration oblivious as profiteers violating price list exploit consumers

City administration of Karachi fails citizenry in ensuring they get food items sold at official rates set by the commissioner’s office.

Essential edible items, such as flour, are being sold at hiked prices than those on the official price list in the metropolis.

As per the official price list issued by Karachi commissioner office, eggs should be sold for not more than Rs82 a dozen. However, they are available for no less than Rs180 to Rs200 per dozen. That is more than a 100% exploitation which has been going unnoticed.

Bakery owners blame the rise in the price of eggs to limited supply. They say, egg supply from Punjab has stopped, leading to an increase in the wholesale price and consequently in the retail price.

Similarly, the price of flour has been fixed at Rs45 per kg by the office but it is being sold for almost double that price, at Rs75 to -80 a kg.

On the other hand, sugar, whose official price has been set at Rs66 per kg, is being sold for approximately Rs100 per kg at most shops.

People to bear the brunt of this say relevant authorities, including the governments of Sindh and Karachi have given profiteers a free rein, as they complain that price control committees apparently do nothing to address the issue.
