K-Electric Seeks Renewal of Power Distribution License as Expiry Looms

K-Electric (KE), the sole power distribution company in the city, has initiated the process to renew its license as it nears the end of its 20-year term.

With the expiration of K-Electric’s power distribution license approaching, the company has formally approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to seek the renewal of its distribution license.

K-Electric has submitted a request to NEPRA, urging the regulatory authority to extend the distribution license for another 20 years, as the current term is set to expire on July 20.

The power utility has specifically requested NEPRA to extend the license until July 20, 2043.

In its request, K-Electric has emphasized that it currently serves approximately 3.4 million consumers, and the renewal of the license is crucial for the benefit of consumers and the overall power industry.

Upon receiving the request, NEPRA has initiated a consultation process, inviting all stakeholders and citizens to express their opinions on the matter within a period of 14 days.

This development holds significance as the renewal of K-Electric’s license will play a pivotal role in ensuring the uninterrupted power supply to the consumers in Karachi.

The decision regarding the license renewal will be based on the feedback received during the consultation period, considering the interests of the consumers and the energy sector as a whole.
