K-Electric, the sole power provider in the city, has introduced a new initiative allowing income tax filers to waive the advance income tax on their electricity bills. This move aims to alleviate the financial burden on consumers who actively pay their income tax.
According to a KE spokesperson, consumers who have matching addresses on their electricity bills and CNICs (Computerized National Identity Cards) are eligible for this exemption. In order to avail of this benefit, users are encouraged to register on the KE website to facilitate the waiver of advance taxes.
Addressing concerns about the rising electricity prices and taxation, the spokesperson emphasized that while K-Electric empathizes with consumer worries, the imposition of taxes and the determination of electricity rates fall outside its jurisdiction.
Regarding recent incidents of violence against KE staff, the spokesperson asserted the utility’s right to take legal action against individuals inciting attacks on its employees. It’s important to note that the power to set electricity rates is vested in Napra (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority) and the Ministry of Energy. Additionally, the application of taxes on electricity bills is not within the purview of power distribution companies.
Consumers are advised to prioritize timely payment of their electricity bills to ensure an uninterrupted power supply and to contribute to the stability of the power sector.
In related news, the caretaker federal cabinet recently announced its intention to approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) seeking approval for measures aimed at providing relief to power consumers in Pakistan who are grappling with surging electricity bills. As discussions continue between the government and the IMF, consumers are eager to see how these efforts will impact their electricity bills and overall financial well-being.
