Cyclone Tej moves towards Arabian Peninsula, no impact expected on Pakistan

An Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) named “Tej” has been progressing in the southwest Arabian Sea and is currently moving northwestward toward the Arabian Peninsula’s coast, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The latest update, issued at 10:00 am (PST), positions Cyclone Tej at latitude 14.4 N and longitude 53.2 °E, approximately 300km southwest of Salalah (Oman), 220km southeast of Al Ghaydah (Yemen), and 1520km southwest of Gwadar (Pakistan).

The cyclone exhibits maximum sustained surface winds ranging between 150-160km/h, with gusts reaching 180km/h. Sea conditions are reported as very high, with maximum wave heights of 35ft around the system center.

The system is projected to maintain its northwestward trajectory and is expected to cross the Yemen coast near Al Ghaydah by midnight as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) with wind speeds of 120-130km/h and gusts up to 150km/h.

Importantly, there is no anticipated impact on any of Pakistan’s coastal areas from this cyclonic system. The Daily Forecast from PMD indicates dry weather in most districts of Sindh, a coastal province of Pakistan. In Balochistan, some areas may experience strong winds and thundershowers today, with dry weather anticipated in the coming days.
