The Sindh School Education Department has announced that all public and private educational institutions across the province will remain closed on August 4, 2026, on account of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

According to a notification issued by the department, schools will observe a holiday on 20th Safar 1448 AH, which falls on Tuesday, August 4.
The holiday applies to all government and private educational institutions operating under the administrative control of the Sindh School Education and Literacy Department.
The notification stated that the decision was taken in accordance with the resolution approved during a meeting of the Steering Committee held on February 12, 2026.
Why Are Schools Closed on August 4?
Chehlum, also known as Arbaeen, is observed on the 20th of Safar to mark the end of the 40-day mourning period following the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala in 680 AD.
Mourning processions featuring Alam, Tazia and Zuljinah are expected to be held in different cities across Sindh.
The school holiday announcement comes as the Sindh Home Department has introduced additional security measures ahead of Chehlum.
The department has imposed a province-wide ban on pillion riding during the occasion.
The Sindh government has also extended the enforcement of Section 144 across the province for another month, with the extension taking effect from August 1, 2026.

Under the restrictions, wall chalking, rallies, demonstrations and the public display of weapons will remain prohibited across Sindh.
The measures have been introduced ahead of Chehlum processions and religious gatherings, with authorities expected to implement enhanced security arrangements in areas where processions will take place.
Students and parents across Sindh are advised to take note of the August 4 holiday and plan their academic and travel schedules accordingly.
