The Karachi administration has decided to immediately evacuate highly dangerous buildings across the city to prevent potential loss of life and property during the upcoming monsoon season.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, where the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) briefed officials on the condition of unsafe buildings across the city.

According to the SBCA, Karachi has 584 dangerous buildings, of which 59 have been declared highly dangerous, including 29 heritage buildings that require urgent attention.

The meeting decided that the SBCA will immediately issue evacuation notices for all highly dangerous buildings. Public notices will also be displayed to alert residents and ensure timely compliance.

Commissioner Hassan Naqvi directed the SBCA to prioritize measures aimed at protecting the lives of residents living in unsafe structures and instructed the authority to provide the list of highly dangerous buildings to all deputy commissioners without delay.

According to the briefing, District South has the highest number of dangerous buildings, with 442 identified structures. Other affected areas include 73 buildings in District Central, 16 in District East, 18 in Korangi, 28 in Keamari, five in Malir, and two in District West.

The meeting also decided that unsafe buildings will be demolished based on their structural condition to minimize risks during the monsoon season.

Authorities further agreed that if residents fail to comply with evacuation notices, gas, electricity, and water connections to the affected buildings may be disconnected in coordination with utility service providers.

Last year, the authorities in Karachi have reviewed the progress on demolishing 68 highly dilapidated buildings following a deadly collapse in Lyari.

In a meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi, told that 44 buildings have already been vacated in Karachi’s South and East districts to prevent further tragedies in areas most at risk of structural failure.

Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso said that 41 buildings have been evacuated in his district, including 10 historical buildings, all identified by the Sindh Buildings Control Authority (SBCA).

He added that 59 buildings in District South had been declared highly dangerous by SBCA, and evacuation efforts are being carried out jointly with their technical teams.
