In a move to improve environmental awareness, the Climate Action Center (CAC), in collaboration with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), has launched citywide air quality displays across Karachi.

The initiative aims to make air quality information more accessible and visible to the public, encouraging citizens to stay informed about environmental conditions in their surroundings.

Under this new system, daily Air Quality Index (AQI) readings are now being displayed on digital screens managed by the KMC throughout the city.

These displays include poles, streamers, and underpass SMD screens located at key traffic points and busy urban corridors.

The AQI data is updated and displayed after 5:30 PM each day, allowing residents to check pollution levels during peak evening hours when outdoor activity is common.

“We have been trying for a long time – in fact, it was our dream – to bring the air quality readings we’ve collected over the past five to six years, along with the monitors we are installing, to the public,” said Yasir Darya, founder and director of CAC.

“Since most air pollution comes from cars and motorbikes burning petrol and diesel, we wanted this information displayed on screens across the roads so people can clearly see the air quality in different areas of Karachi,” he added.

“For the first time, on such a scale, the public will be able to understand air quality through a simple color code – green, yellow, orange, red, or maroon – and know whether it is safe or dangerous,” he concluded.

By bringing real-time environmental data into public spaces, the CAC and KMC hope to encourage more responsible behavior, such as reducing unnecessary travel, using masks during high pollution periods, and supporting cleaner practices.
