A deadly suicide blast struck a mosque on the outskirts of Rawalpindi on Friday, resulting in the martyrdom of over 31 worshippers and injuries to more than 160 people, officials and media reports confirmed.

The explosion occurred during prayers, causing panic and chaos in the surrounding area. According to media reports, the suicide bomber attempted to enter the mosque but was stopped at the gate by security personnel.

At that point, the attacker detonated explosives strapped to his body, leading to heavy casualties among worshippers present near the entrance. Authorities stated that the attacker was affiliated with Fitna al-Kharij, a banned extremist group.

Emergency services, police, and security agencies rushed to the scene immediately after the blast. The area was cordoned off, and a search and clearance operation was launched to ensure no further threats remained.

The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, including PIMS Hospital in Islamabad, where several victims are reported to be in critical condition.

On the instructions of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry visited PIMS Hospital to inquire about the condition of the injured.

He directed hospital authorities to provide special and immediate medical treatment to all victims of the blast.

President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the attack and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. He offered condolences to the families of the martyrs and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The President stated that targeting innocent citizens is a crime against humanity and reaffirmed that the nation stands united with the affected families.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the suicide blast, expressing grief over the martyrdom of worshippers. He prayed for the elevation of the martyrs’ ranks and patience for their families.

The Prime Minister ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and directed authorities to immediately identify and bring those responsible to justice. He also instructed officials to ensure the best possible medical facilities for the injured.

Security has been tightened across Rawalpindi and nearby areas, while intelligence agencies continue investigations. Further details are awaited as authorities assess the situation.
