Pakistan and Romania have reached an agreement to build a Friendship Monument in Karachi to celebrate 61 years of diplomatic relations, cultural exchange and long-term partnership as part of the Pakistan-Romania Friendship Monument Initiative.
The decision was taken during a meeting between Romanian Ambassador Dr. Dan Stoenescu and Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi, during which both parties explored opportunities to increase cooperation in culture, business, and education.

Officials reported that the Pakistan Romania Business Council will oversee the design, construction, and long-term maintenance of this monument, which serves as a permanent symbol of goodwill between the two nations.
Ambassador Stoenescu expressed her thanks to Commissioner Naqvi for finding an ideal location for the monument, noting how this project represents shared ambitions to deepen cultural links and increase bilateral engagement.
Romania plans to reopen its Honorary Consulate in Karachi, operating across Sindh to support trade, facilitate business relationships, and foster exchanges between institutions and communities.
Reopening of the consulate will improve access to Romanian services, foster economic collaboration, and strengthen Sindh’s presence on European markets through expanded public and private partnerships.

During discussions, both sides highlighted opportunities for cooperation in urban governance, climate resilience, public administration, and sustainable development through joint initiatives involving Karachi and Romanian cities.
Officials also expressed an interest in initiating academic collaborations, such as student exchange programs, faculty partnerships, and collaborative research projects designed to foster greater mutual understanding between educational institutions.
At this meeting, emphasis was given to increasing private sector involvement through investment-friendly initiatives and encouraging companies to explore trade opportunities between Karachi, Sindh, Constanta, and other Romanian economic centers.

Proposals were also made to name one Karachi road “Constanta Avenue,” to honor Romanian port city Constanta; similarly, one street in Constanta would be named “Karachi Avenue,” signalling mutual connections.
Authorities stated that such symbolic gestures help strengthen deeper cultural ties, generate public interest, and highlight longstanding friendships which have grown stronger with regular political, social, and economic cooperation.
At the conclusion of the meeting, all parties involved pledged their commitment to enhance cultural programs, foster business partnerships and advance sustainable city-to-city cooperation through forthcoming bilateral initiatives and community engagement projects.
