Cyber crime shoots up in Karachi

As most companies ask their employees to work from home, cyber crime has spiked across the world.

Federal Investigation Agency as reported by local news media, has received more than hundred complaints related to cybercrime in Karachi alone with losses over 1 million rupees. This increase in cybercrime seems to be a result of banks increasing online banking facilities to cater to customers during the pandemic and lockdown.

In addition, the closure of offices, businesses and other places has created difficulty for the FIA to carry out their investigative work.

Scammers are using multiple emails, messages and advertisements  to convince people into clicking on a link which leads to hacking of personal data. These scammers usually tend to pose as direct communication from the World Health Organisation, Universities, or other Corona virus related information.

With most institutions not equipped to deal with the threat of online hacking the fragile networks struggle to safeguard people from falling prey to these fraudulent messages.
