The Sindh Safe City Surveillance System has released results of a 36-day traffic campaign, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), in Karachi, showing arrests, recoveries, and improved vehicle monitoring.

Between June 10 and July 16, the use of AI-based facial recognition and number plate detection led to 19 criminal cases, while 23 suspects were arrested through surveillance cameras.

The report stated that 4 illegal vehicles were seized through the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) system, targeting stolen, snatched, and vehicles with fake registration plates.

DG Safe City Asif Ijaz Sheikh confirmed that the initiative is expanding in scope, with successful testing phases leading to real-time alerts, increased surveillance, and faster police response.

Earlier in June, the system helped in 15 arrests and seizure of several vehicles within 21 days, and also led to the arrest of a snatcher gang, thanks to the advanced camera network.

Thousands of alerts were generated during the pilot phase, which began on January 20, showcasing the effectiveness of AI in urban crime prevention and traffic enforcement across Karachi.

Officials say the system plays a key role in real-time tracking of suspects, improving public safety and aiding in targeted police operations throughout the city’s major traffic zones.

DG Sheikh reiterated that Safe City cameras are now fully operational, and continuous upgrades will strengthen security, road management, and emergency responses in Karachi and beyond.
