Sindh faces flash drought risk, PDMA issues alert

Sindh Drought Alert

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh has issued a Flash Drought Alert following a warning from the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s National Drought Monitoring Centre.

The alert highlights a significant heatwave and dry conditions across Sindh, with daily temperatures recorded 5°C to 7°C above normal.

According to the advisory dated June 12, the continued rise in temperature and lack of rainfall are severely affecting soil moisture levels, especially in drought-prone and agricultural areas.

Crops like maize, sugarcane, and cotton are at serious risk, and livestock may also suffer due to water and fodder shortages.

PDMA has urged deputy commissioners, DDMA chairmen, and local departments to take immediate precautionary measures.

Farmers are advised to stay updated on drought alerts, and communities are encouraged to store water and avoid using contaminated sources.

Experts warn that mild drought can reduce vegetation and increase the risk of waterborne diseases.

With the dry spell expected to continue, officials stress the importance of preparedness to minimize damage to agriculture and rural livelihoods.
