The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved two major solar power projects in Sindh with a combined capacity of 270 megawatts, aimed at reducing load-shedding in Karachi, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the Sindh Energy Department said a 120MW solar project will be set up in Deh Halkani, and another 150MW project in Deh Methagar.
Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah stated these projects will help provide affordable and clean energy to the people of Karachi.
The minister said this initiative supports the vision of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who has emphasized cost-effective electricity for the masses.
“Solar energy will ease the burden on our grid and reduce power cuts in Karachi,” he added.
Earlier this year, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the provincial government has started distributing free solar panels to low-income households to help with rising electricity costs.
Addressing a meeting of government spokespersons, he said the initiative is designed to assist people who struggle to pay power bills, offering solar kits that include a panel, fan, three bulbs, battery backup, and a mobile charger.
Memon said the project is part of the Sindh Solar Energy Project, which aims to reach 200,000 households, focusing on renewable energy adoption and energy independence for low-income citizens.
He also highlighted broader efforts by the Sindh government to improve health services and basic amenities, noting that over 2.1 million people are being supported with housing and electricity relief.
