Karachi imposes Rs10,000 fine for washing cars with tap water

Karachi vehicle washing ban

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has enforced a resolution to fine Karachi citizens for misusing municipal tap water for washing vehicles in public spaces, including streets, alleys, and commercial centers.

The resolution, moved by Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, was unanimously approved during a City Council session.

The fine of Rs 10,000 will be implemented based on complaints from Union Committee (UC) chairmen, and funds collected will be reinvested in the same UC area, ensuring local accountability and benefit.

PPP member Najmi Alam highlighted the issue during the session, citing the example of Clifton’s Talwar area, where fresh water from a roadside line is used openly to wash cars.

He added that the Noor Highway in North Nazimabad has already been damaged due to constant water seepage.

Meanwhile, KMC opposition leader Saifuddin Advocate criticized the mayor for prioritizing long-term plans while Karachi faces severe water shortages.

He highlighted that the K-IV water project’s cost had surged from Rs20 billion to Rs200 billion and accused authorities of deliberately damaging pipelines.

He also announced upcoming street protests by opposition parties.

In response, Mayor Murtaza Wahab assured the council that a dedicated session on water management would be held next week to address the pressing concerns.
