The Sindh Cabinet has officially terminated the contracts of 289 doctors and nurses hired during the COVID-19 crisis, following Health Department recommendations.
These healthcare workers were employed temporarily during the pandemic. Their contracts expired on June 30, 2024, and no extension was deemed necessary.
The government clarified that since these positions were contract-based and time-bound, their termination required no fresh approval or legal process.
Meanwhile, a proposal to re-evaluate 102 candidates previously marked ineligible was also dismissed. These individuals lacked mandatory PMDC registration or had incomplete house jobs.

Cabinet members noted that altering eligibility criteria now could lead to administrative inconsistencies and open doors to legal complications in future recruitments.
The suggestion to relax age limits for some candidates who were disqualified due to being “over-age” was also not entertained.

Granting age relaxations selectively could trigger litigation and violate merit-based hiring practices previously observed during emergency recruitments.
However, not all COVID-era recruits were dismissed. The Cabinet approved a tenure extension for 32 doctors, whose services were found necessary and effective.
The Health Department has been directed to review remaining staff members and make further recommendations in line with service needs and legal guidelines.
