Infant Karachi road accident Karachi City

Infant born after 13 years dies in Karachi’s road accident

A tragic incident occurred in the Nasir Colony area of Korangi on December 14, where a six-month-old baby, Shahmir, was killed after being crushed by a 22-wheeler trailer.

According to his father, Abdul Hameed, Shahmir was the only child of his parents, born after 13 years of marriage.

The accident took place when the family’s motorcycle lost balance due to potholes on the road and the five-month-old baby – Shahmir – fell from his mother’s lap and was run over by the trailer.

In an interview with local media, Abdul Hameed blamed the Karachi traffic police and regional administration for the tragedy, accusing them of corruption and negligence.

“We were on our way to the market to buy warm clothes for winter when the accident occurred,” Hameed said.

“A trailer, coming from behind, ran over Shahmir, and he died on the spot,” he added.

The grieving father also pointed out that the traffic police allow heavy vehicles on roads during prohibited hours in exchange for bribes.

Abdul Hameed further pointed out that a nursery had been built on land beyond the designated road area, and vehicles were parked along the road by mechanics.

He also criticized the traffic management, saying people regularly used the road illegally, worsening the situation. This tragic incident adds to the growing number of road fatalities in the city, with the toll reaching 500 this year.

It is pertinent to mention here that during a press conference on December 12, the Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho revealed that a total of 479 people have lost their lives in various road accidents in the port city in 2024 so far.

In his media talk, Odho stressed the increasing number of fatal road accidents in the past few days in Karachi and disclosed that a total of 479 people have died, while 401 people have been injured in various road accidents this year.

He highlighted a surge in traffic accidents this year, with 345 cases reported so far while stating that the increase in heavy traffic due to ongoing development projects across the city has worsened the situation.
