Electric vehicle demand rises in Pakistan

The current fiscal year has witnessed a notable rise in vehicle sales, driven by increased demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and a surge in other categories.

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reports an 82 percent increase in the sale of buses and trucks, a 60 percent rise in jeeps and pickups, and a 23.4 percent growth in rickshaw and motorcycle sales.

The growing interest in electric vehicles highlights a shift towards environmentally friendly transportation options.

Lower interest rates have been a significant factor in boosting sales, with further reductions and the introduction of new models likely to sustain this upward trend.

Auto industry experts anticipate continued growth in EV adoption as consumers seek cost-effective and sustainable alternatives.

Earlier this month, the Climate Action Centre (CAC) raised alarm over Pakistan’s dangerous levels of air pollution, stressing that smog, primarily caused by petrol exhaust, is wreaking havoc on public health across Pakistan.

The CAC representatives held an emergency press conference at the Karachi Press Club today highlighting that vehicle emissions contribute 60-80 percent of the pollutants responsible for Pakistan’s worsening air quality.

The experts asserted that the harmful particles from petrol exhaust stick to city buildings and roads, creating toxic soot that penetrates residents’ lungs, raising risks of cancer, respiratory diseases, and heart conditions.

Pakistan’s air quality crisis reached new extremes with Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 1,700, and Multan’s reaching a staggering 2,400.
