Lenient criminal justice system: IG Sindh reveals actual reason for surge in street crime in Karachi

Inspector General (IG) Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon has provided insights into the true reason behind the alarming increase in street crimes within Karachi, particularly in the Shahr Quaid area. In a recent conversation with ARY News, IG Sindh highlighted the flaws within the criminal justice system that inadvertently favor the accused, leading to a cycle of repeat offenses. He also discussed the steps being taken to address this issue and enhance crime prevention measures in the city.

The IG pointed out that one of the main factors contributing to the rise in street crime is the leniency of the criminal justice system. Offenders who are granted bail often recommit crimes, as they are not deterred by the consequences of their actions. Additionally, a significant number of victims choose not to file cases, which further perpetuates a sense of impunity among criminals.

To combat this issue and reduce street crimes, the IG emphasized the need for a stronger fear of punishment among potential offenders. He has presented recommendations for reforms and legislative measures to the cabinet, aiming to create a more robust framework that ensures criminals face the appropriate consequences for their actions.

In terms of surveillance and crime detection, IG Sindh revealed that Karachi has approximately 2,200 functioning closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras placed strategically across the city. These cameras play a crucial role in capturing footage of criminal activities and aid in the investigation process. Whenever an incident occurs, the CCTV footage becomes a valuable resource for law enforcement agencies.

To enhance the effectiveness of these surveillance measures, the IG informed that discussions have taken place with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra). They have acknowledged the importance of broadcasting CCTV footage related to crimes on television channels. Pemra has committed to issuing instructions to TV channels to ensure the responsible and ethical dissemination of such footage, aiding in crime prevention and public safety efforts.

IG Ghulam Nabi Memon’s proactive approach in addressing the rising street crime issue in Karachi highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security in the city. By implementing necessary reforms and leveraging technological resources, they aim to create an environment where criminals are apprehended and brought to justice, fostering a sense of safety and well-being for the residents of Karachi.
