Amid allegations of bureaucratic appointments instead of merit-based selections, controversy has arisen over the appointment of chairmen in Sindh education boards. The caretaker chief minister of Sindh has reportedly approved the appointment of commissioners as chairmen for the Inter Board Karachi, Sukkur Board, and Nawabshah Board, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in the selection process.
Notably, the Commissioner Karachi will assume the role of the Chairman of Inter Board Karachi, Commissioner Nawab Shah will take charge as the Chairman of Sukkur Board, and the post of Chairman of Nawabshah Board will also be assigned to a commissioner.
The timing of these appointments has raised eyebrows as it comes just before the announcement of election schedules. The Election Commission had earlier communicated to the Chief Secretary of Sindh, urging a halt in transfers and appointments due to officers being engaged in election duties.
Interestingly, former Minister Ismail Raho and Secretary Boards and Universities Mureed Rahman allegedly obstructed the appointment of chairmen selected by the search committee, despite clearance by three intelligence agencies. Sources suggest that the former minister may have opposed merit-based appointments, leading to negative remarks in the summary sent to the caretaker chief minister.
Meanwhile, significant transfers and appointments are reportedly underway in the education department, with PS Haleem Soomro and PS Imtiaz Pathan involved in the process. Attempts to reach Education Minister Raana Hussain and Secretary Boards and Universities Noor Mohammad Samu for comments were unsuccessful.
The controversy adds to concerns about transparency and fairness in the appointment process for key positions in education boards, particularly as the region approaches election-related activities.
