The Karachi water supply is expected to resume by Saturday night or Sunday morning as the repair work is underway on the damaged 84-inch PRCC pipeline at the University of Karachi.
Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Water Corporation, Engineer Asadullah Khan, issued a video statement explaining the recent pipeline burst at the University of Karachi.
He revealed that the damaged water lines at Siphon 19 were laid decades ago – one in 1956 and the other in 1971, and their lifespan has ended, making them highly vulnerable.
Khan said both damaged pipelines are 84-inch PRCC lines, and one stretches 5 kilometers (16,000 feet) from Saadi Town to University Road. He noted that the U-shaped design of the line causes high water pressure unlike straight pipelines, increasing the risk of bursts.
He clarified that pipelines coming from Dhabeji are laid in a straight line and do not face similar pressure issues, making them structurally more secure compared to those at Siphon 19.
Asadullah Khan confirmed that Mild Steel (MS) pipes are being installed to replace the burst portion. Four tons of lead will be heated to 300°C at both ends to ensure the durability and strength of the new line.
He assured that repair work will be completed by Saturday evening, after which the water supply will return to normal in affected areas of Karachi, including Landhi, Korangi, Nazimabad, and others.
The COO apologized to citizens for the inconvenience caused and thanked them for their patience and cooperation during the emergency maintenance work.
