As the climate change situation worsens, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a heatwave alert for residents of Karachi, as extreme temperatures are likely to grip the metropolis with mercury to reach 41°C.
According to PMD Deputy Director Anjum Zaigham, northwesterly winds will cut off the sea breeze, causing heat to intensify in the metropolis between April 20 [Today] and April 23.
Zaigham stated that the temperature will stay 4°C to 6°C above average, creating hot to very hot and dry weather conditions across Karachi.
Humidity is expected to remain relatively low, around 40 percent in the mornings, and may drop as low as 15 percent to 25 percent during the evenings.
He said that while the temperature will be high, low humidity means the “feel-like” temperature may not be as intense as usual humid heatwaves.

The maximum temperature is expected to hit 39°C to 41°C on Sunday and Monday, with minimum temperatures around 25°C to 27°C, PMD officials said.
The general public, especially children, the elderly, and women, are advised by PMD to stay indoors and keep themselves hydrated throughout this hot spell.
Health experts recommend avoiding sun exposure during afternoon hours, wearing light-colored clothes, and covering heads with caps or wet cloths.

They also advise drinking water or ORS frequently and avoiding dehydrating beverages such as tea, coffee, and sugary drinks to avoid heat-related illness.
Outdoor workers are urged to take frequent breaks in shaded areas and limit physical activities during peak heat hours to prevent heatstroke.
Heatwaves have now become a regular seasonal concern due to rapid urbanization, reduced green cover, and the increasing impacts of climate change.
The Karachi heatwave alert has been shared with local authorities including the mayor, PDMA Sindh, and emergency services like Rescue 1299 for quick response.
