The Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Department has issued a province-wide alert for lumpy skin disease (LSD) just a month ahead of Eid-ul-Azha 2025.
The department, acting on directives from Punjab Livestock Secretary Saqib Ali Ateel, has implemented heightened preventive measures to stop the potential spread of this viral disease, which affects cattle.
Although no confirmed cases have been reported in Punjab so far, authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure a disease-free festive season.
As part of the plan, seven veterinary checkposts have been established across Rawalpindi district. These are tasked with inspecting all incoming cattle and raising public awareness about the disease.

“Our teams have been stationed at all entry and exit points to monitor the movement of animals,” said Dr. Naveed Sahar Zaidi, Director of the Livestock Department in Rawalpindi. “We began our efforts a day before Eid preparations started, ensuring all animals are thoroughly inspected.”
Secretary Ateel emphasized that any visibly infected animals must be stopped from entering the Rawalpindi division. He urged livestock owners and traders to stay alert and report any unusual symptoms to the nearest veterinary centre.
Lumpy skin disease is a contagious viral illness in cattle that causes fever, skin nodules, reduced milk production, and in severe cases, death. It spreads through insect bites and close animal contact, making movement during the Eid season a potential trigger for outbreaks.
Officials have warned that early detection and isolation are critical to preventing the disease from spreading. Farmers are advised not to trade or transport infected cattle and to cooperate fully with veterinary teams at the checkposts.
