Matric Exams 2025: Key guidelines for students as board introduces e-marking

Karachi exams

The annual matriculation examinations for classes 9 and 10 under the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) will officially begin on April 8, 2025.

According to Zaheer Bhutto, the Controller of Examinations, around 379,000 students are expected to participate in this major academic exercise being conducted across the city under strict supervision.

E-Marking for Class 9th:

As Class 9 students are ready for their first-ever board exams under the e-marking system, it’s essential to understand the new format to avoid confusion and mistakes.

This year, the Karachi Matric Board is launching e-marking for Biology and Computer Science papers as a pilot project.

That means your answer sheets will be scanned and checked digitally, so neatness, accuracy, and following instructions are more important than ever.

  • Must fill in Roll Number, Class, Group, Date, Centre, Subject, and Subject Part correctly on the first page of the answer sheet.
  • Bubble your roll number precisely as instructed.
  • Make sure you do not write outside the allocated space, as extra lines or additional pages won’t be visible in the scanned version.
  • Stick to the page limits and write clearly.
  • In Section A (MCQs), all questions are mandatory.
  • In Section B, choose any six short questions.
  • In Section C, pick three long questions to attempt.
  • Use only pens, pencils, and tools allowed for that specific subject.

Prohibited Items:

The Board has strictly banned items such as books, notes, mobile phones, and all electronic devices inside the examination halls. Even calculators are prohibited for subjects where they are not required.

Cheating Consequences:

The Controller warned that if any student is found cheating or in possession of cheating material, the paper of candidate’s paper will be immediately canceled and he/she may face hefty fines along with a penalty of one or two years, which will exempt them from appearing in the exam from the said time period.

Distribution of Question Papers:

The Controller of Examinations, Zaheer Bhutto, confirmed that officers from the board office will be responsible for distributing sealed question paper packets. These will be handed over to the center superintendents of respective examination centers daily.

The entire process is being monitored closely to prevent any leaks or irregularities.

Number of Exam Centers:

This year, about 520 exam centers have been established throughout Karachi. The board has used government schools as examination centers; however, schools lacking proper furniture or infrastructure have been excluded.

An examination center has also been set up inside Karachi Central Jail to facilitate under-trial students.

Exam Timings:

The science group exams will be held in two shifts, starting at 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM. General timing for the morning shift is 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, while the afternoon shift runs from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

To facilitate smooth operations, 19 hub centers have been created across 18 towns in Karachi.

Sensitive Examination Centers:

The Examinations Controller identified Landhi, Lyari, Orangi, Baldia, and Keamari as sensitive areas for Examination Centers, however, additional security and supervision will be provided at centers in these locations.

Over 70 vigilance teams have been formed, including directors, deputy directors, DEOs, and senior teachers. About 50 officers from the Directorate of Private Schools and 20 high-level vigilance teams will actively monitor the centers to curb cheating and ensure discipline.

Section 144 imposed:

The board has emphasized that mobile phones will be strictly banned inside examination halls. In a preventive step, a letter will be sent to the Commissioner of Karachi to ban the use of photocopy (photostat) machines near exam centers during exam hours. The board has requested the enforcement of Section 144 around examination centers to discourage cheating.

Additionally, a formal request has been made to K-Electric to ensure uninterrupted power supply during exam timings as the hot weather gripped the city.

Admit Cards, Roll Number Slips:

All admit cards have been made available online for both students and teachers through the official board portal. If any school is unable to access them online, they can collect the PDF version of admit cards by visiting Room No. 24 at the board office. The representative must carry a photocopy of their CNIC, school card, and authorization letter.

Roll number slips were issued 15 days before exams through schools and colleges. Private candidates can download their slips from the Sindh Board’s official website.

With strict measures in place and clear instructions for students, the BSEK aims to conduct the 2025 Matric exams in a transparent and disciplined manner, ensuring a fair academic environment for all candidates.
