A pregnant woman, her child, and her husband succumbed to their injuries after a speeding water tanker collided with their motorcycle under the Malir Halt Bridge in Karachi, police reported.

According to police officials, the accident occurred due to an apparent brake failure, causing the tanker to lose control as it came from the highway onto Shahrah-e-Faisal.

The family was crushed on the spot, leading to their instant death.

The media reports suggested that the man was taking his pregnant wife to the hospital for delivery when the fatal crash occurred.

Police have arrested the driver and taken the water tanker into custody as investigations continue.

Karachi’s worsening traffic situation led to three more deaths in separate road accidents, highlighting the city’s growing road safety crisis.

Near Johar Mor, a speeding cement mixer truck crashed into a motorcycle, killing 25-year-old Abdul Saboor on the spot.

The accident enraged bystanders, who set the truck on fire, prompting police intervention. Authorities later arrested the truck driver.

In another incident at Liaquatabad No. 10, a dumper truck hit a motorcyclist, killing him instantly. Meanwhile, in Keamari, a car struck a bike, resulting in another fatality.

Karachi has facing a deadly traffic crisis, with 107 people killed in road accidents during the first 45 days of 2025, according to rescue services. The victims include 78 men, 14 women, 11 children, and 4 girls.

The rescue officials reported that at least 1,493 others were injured in these crashes, including 629 men, 193 women, 42 children, and 18 girls. Traffic police data reveals that most accidents involved heavy vehicles like dumpers, trailers, and oil tankers, with 32 such incidents recorded in January and early February alone.

Authorities have cracked down on traffic violations, issuing 34,655 fines and arresting 490 drivers. They also canceled 532 vehicle fitness certificates for failing safety standards. To address the surge in crashes, a four-member committee has been formed to investigate causes and propose safety improvements, including stricter checks on heavy vehicle fitness and driver licenses.
