Karachi sees rise in respiratory illnesses amid weather shift

Karachi respiratory illnesses

Hospitals in the city are witnessing a sharp rise in respiratory disease cases as changing weather conditions impact public health.

According to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital, over 150 patients with respiratory issues visit the emergency department daily. A similar number is being reported at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where doctors say the surge is straining medical resources.

Health experts reveal that children are the most affected, with many suffering from sore throats, flu, and persistent coughs. Those with asthma are also experiencing worsening symptoms due to increased allergens in the air.

Doctors have urged citizens, especially during Ramadan, to avoid cold and poor-quality beverages, which can worsen throat infections. They also recommend wearing masks outdoors to reduce exposure to dust and pollutants that can trigger respiratory issues.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted hot and dry weather over the next 24 hours.

Karachi’s temperature may reach 38°C, with humidity levels at 40 percent. Warm winds continue to blow across the city, further worsening air quality.
