Qadir Patel, a member of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior, revealed that 22,000 bureaucrats in Pakistan hold dual citizenship.
During a meeting on the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2024, PPP lawmakers raised concerns over the appointment of bureaucrats with dual citizenship.
Patel highlighted that while Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and judges are prohibited from holding dual citizenship due to their access to sensitive information, bureaucrats, who manage even more critical secrets, are still allowed to hold multiple nationalities.
The 2024 amendment bill proposes changes to Section 14A of the Pakistan Citizenship Act, 1951.
The draft includes a new provision allowing individuals who renounce their Pakistani citizenship to regain it through a declaration, subject to notification by the federal government.
Patel stressed the need for implementing the dual citizenship law on bureaucrats, calling for more transparency and accountability.
