Karachi: Road accidents claimed 479 lives in 2024

In 2024 so far, a total of 479 people have lost their lives in various road accidents in the port city, this number was revealed by the Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho in a press conference along with DIG Traffic.

In his media talk, Odho stressed the increasing number of fatal road accidents in the past few days in Karachi and disclosed that a total of 479 people have died, while 401 people have been injured in various road accidents this year.

He highlighted a surge in traffic accidents this year, with 345 cases reported so far while stating that the increase in heavy traffic due to ongoing development projects across the city has worsened the situation.

To address this situation, Odho stated that the police will implement stricter measures, including higher fines for heavy traffic violations and the registration of cases against reckless drivers.

“As per data, the vehicle included in the majority of the fatal accidents in Karachi are dumpers, water tankers, mini busses, and other trallers,” Odho said.

He further disclosed that the Karachi traffic police issued a total of 350,000 fines of hefty amounts over traffic rules violation in the past 11 months.

Meanwhile, bail for irresponsible driving will no longer be granted at police stations but must be sought through the courts.

The chief noted that motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable, with many accidents linked to the lack of helmets and side mirrors.

“Approximately 57 percent of accidents result from negligence or small vehicles,” he said.

Adding that a public awareness campaign will encourage motorcyclists to adopt safety precautions, while the police aim to reduce accidents and save lives through these initiatives.
