Pakistan’s cotton imports surge amid decline in local production Business

Pakistan becomes top buyer of U.S. cotton globally

Amid a significant decline in domestic cotton production, Pakistani spinning mills are increasingly relying on imported cotton, with record purchases from the United States.

According to Ehsan-ul-Haq, Chairman of the Cotton Ginners Forum, Pakistan has signed contracts for 72,000 bales of American cotton in just one week.

Ehsan-ul-Haq noted that Pakistan has emerged as the top buyer of U.S. cotton globally this year, with import agreements surpassing 3 million bales.

The surge in imports stems from the low domestic cotton yield and limited availability of high-quality cotton in Pakistan.

The increased demand has also led to a rise in cotton prices domestically, now reaching Rs 18,200 per maund, up by Rs 200.

As local production struggles to meet demand, reliance on imports is anticipated to continue, impacting both prices and supply dynamics in Pakistan’s textile sector.
