WWF-Pakistan, Bank AlFalah launch #GreenWayForward plantation drive for mangroves in Karachi

World Wide Fund for Nature Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan) has joined hands with Bank AlFalah to initiate the #GreenWayForward plantation drive. The collaborative effort aims to contribute to the reforestation of mangroves and improve natural resource management in the country.

WWF-Pakistan, with a legacy of environmental conservation since 1970, is partnering with Bank Alfalah to plant a minimum of 15,000 saplings at the Wetlands in Sandspit, Karachi, symbolizing the total number of employees at the Bank. In addition to the planting initiative, WWF-Pakistan will provide comprehensive post-care for the saplings for one year, ensuring long-term sustainability. This includes regular monitoring and replacement of the planted saplings.

The plantation of 15,000 mangrove trees signifies a monumental step towards safeguarding Karachi’s coastal ecosystem. The Mangroves of Sindh’s coastal zone cover about 600,000 hectares and play a pivotal role in mitigating the impacts of climate change. They act as a natural barrier against erosion, storm surges, and coastal flooding, while supporting exceptional biodiversity by providing vital habitats for various plant and animal species.

Atif Bajwa, President and CEO of Bank Alfalah, emphasized the Bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its active role in addressing climate change. The collaboration with WWF-Pakistan for planting 15,000 mangroves marks the Bank’s first step in preserving the planet for future generations. Bank Alfalah has pledged to plant 100,000 trees across Pakistan by 2030, promoting a greener environment and a sustainable nation.

Hammad Naqi Khan, Director General, WWF-Pakistan, praised corporate partnerships like this that advance conservation efforts and build a sustainable future. He appreciated the support of corporate partners in driving initiatives for environmental sustainability. Together, they aim to address climate change challenges and preserve precious ecosystems for future generations.

In light of the devastating floods experienced in Pakistan last year, a consequence widely attributed to the climate crisis, the #GreenWayForward initiative urges communities and individuals to actively engage in tree plantation drives. The collaboration fosters a collective effort towards building a resilient and sustainable future for the community.

Bank Alfalah and WWF-Pakistan’s joint commitment to preserving Karachi’s mangroves reflects their dedication to environmental conservation and underscores the significance of public-private partnerships in addressing environmental challenges and promoting a greener nation.
