Wildfires in Turkey claims 8 lives, affects coastal locality


Wildfires in Turkey that erupted in its Southern coast have taken 2 more lives on Sunday, taking the total death toll to 8. Firefighters are battling with the blazes in coastal resort town.


According to the Health Minister Fahrettin Koca, 2 more people have lost the battle of their lives against the wildfires in southern town of Manavgat, taking the tally of deaths to 8. While 10 others are under treatment in the hospital.


Manavgat, Marmaris and the inland town of Milas are largely affected with the wildfires, the residents of these areas are being evacuated to the safer places, informed the Forest Ministry Bekir Pakdemirli.


Firefighters are busy in containing the blazes, more than 100 blazes that erupted in last five days have been contained, said the authorities.


A group of tourists and hotel staff was evacuated by boat as flames spread and plumes of smoke filled the sky in the popular resort town of Bodrum, said Pakdermirli.


Earlier the fire had taken the lives of 6 people, five people in Manavgat and one person in Marmaris, which has now reached to eight deaths including two more on Sunday.


The Turkish government pledged to rebuild damaged homes and compensate for losses in areas affected by the fires. 13 planes, 45 helicopters, drones, and 828 fire-fighting vehicles were involved in firefighting efforts, informed Forestry minister.
