In a surprising discovery, a previously unknown underground rainwater drainage system has been unearthed near the iconic Merewether Clock Tower in Karachi, Pakistan. The system, believed to have been built during the British colonial era, was found beneath the bustling I.I. Chundrigar Road.
Upon receiving the information, the Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, promptly visited the site to assess the condition and potential of the drain. Mayor Wahab confirmed that this hidden drainage system is a natural mechanism designed to channel rainwater, which will now be connected to the existing drainage network, including Hijrat Colony and the city’s main drains.
With the aim of optimizing the drainage infrastructure in the city, Mayor Wahab announced that the necessary work to integrate the newly discovered drain will be completed within a month. Additionally, ongoing efforts to clean and maintain other drains across Karachi are underway to ensure effective rainwater management and prevent flooding during the monsoon season.
The revelation of this hidden rainwater drainage system near the historic Merewether Clock Tower highlights the city’s rich heritage and the importance of preserving and utilizing existing infrastructure for improved urban planning and development.
