SSWMB places 2-month ban on garbage disposal near storm drains

The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board on Friday announced a two-month ban on dumping garbage in and around storm drains. The decision was taken on the recommendation of the board’s secretary, keeping the ongoing monsoon season in mind.

According to a survey, more than 100 garbage-pickers work near the Gujjar, Orangi and Mahmoodabad canals. These people pick the garbage they can sell for profit and the rest is left to be dumped in the canals. In turn, when it rains, the garbage chokes the canals causing rainwater to flood the city in various parts.

To keep such a situation from arising this year, a ban has been placed on the accumulation of garbage near the city’s storm drains.
