The Sindh government has announced its decision to introduce the first transgender education policy. The draft for the policy has entered its final phase, and Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah has emphasized the importance of providing equal rights to transgender persons to receive an education.
Minister Shah stated that scholarships will also be awarded to transgender individuals as part of the new policy. The aim is to facilitate transgender persons in accessing educational opportunities that were previously limited to them.
This initiative follows the federal government’s inclusion of transgender persons in the Benazir Kafalat Programme last year. Shazia Marri, Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), had announced on social media that transgender persons were being included in the program for the first time. Marri highlighted that transgender persons are an integral part of society, and it is the government’s responsibility to protect and support them. She encouraged transgender individuals to obtain their CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card) and enroll in the program to avail themselves of its benefits.
The introduction of the transgender education policy by the Sindh government reflects a significant step toward societal inclusion and ensuring equal opportunities for all individuals to pursue education. By providing scholarships and other support mechanisms, the government aims to create an inclusive educational environment that empowers transgender persons and enables them to thrive in their academic pursuits.
