Sindh govt successfully completes special training programs for women bus drivers

In a significant development, the Sindh government has successfully concluded special training programs aimed at empowering women to operate buses, particularly for its flagship initiative of women-only pink buses. The decision, endorsed during the Sindh Mass Transit Authority’s (SMTA) 10th board meeting, was confirmed by provincial minister for Information and Transportation, Sharjeel Inam Memon.

Minister Memon, during the meeting, emphasized that the inclusion of female bus drivers not only promotes gender equality but also enhances women’s sense of security and safety during their travels. He highlighted the vision of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), in empowering women across various spheres.

With the cabinet’s approval, the meeting also delved into discussions regarding subsidies for the People’s Bus Service. The board scrutinized feasibility studies for the second phase of the People’s Bus Service, proposing the introduction of an environmentally friendly electric taxi service and the incorporation of 500 new buses.

Memon conveyed that the implementation of the second phase is anticipated to significantly alleviate public transportation challenges. Additionally, the launch of an eco-friendly electric taxi service is expected to have a positive impact on the environment while creating new job opportunities.

The SMTA board meeting also addressed the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Key officials, including Saleem Rajput (Transport Secretary), Kamal Dayo (Managing Director of SMTA), Ahmed Nawaz Cheema (Deputy Inspector General for Traffic), Sikandar Shaikh, and Tufail Paliju (Managing Director of Karachi Transport), were present during the meeting.
