Sindh CM lays foundation stone for M9-N5 link road in Kathore

Sindh Chief Minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar laid the foundation stone for the M9-N5 Link Road interchange in Kathore, emphasizing its critical role in connecting Karachi’s industrial arteries through the M9-N5 link road project. The interchange represents a significant step in completing the traffic flow from Karachi to the upcountry.

During the ceremony, the chief minister highlighted the record time construction of the road leading to the interchange, underscoring its readiness. With the integration of this missing link, the entire project is poised to be fully operational, achieving its intended objectives.

The M9-N5 Link Road is notably Pakistan’s first Public Private Partnership project solely based on traffic revenue. The concessionaire independently financed the project and committed to managing operations and maintenance for the next 23 years, without requiring equity or financial support from the Sindh government.

Acknowledging unforeseen delays affecting project revenues, the chief minister affirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to compensating the concessionaire for the loss of revenue, ensuring the project’s seamless progression. He urged the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) Director-General to prioritize connecting traffic to the M9 through slip lanes on a first-priority basis, easing the financial burden on the government.

Expressing readiness to provide necessary funds for construction as per the existing agreement, the CM expressed hope that the FWO would complete the interchange within the stipulated 12-month timeline.

The 22-km four-lane dual-carriageway project serves as a crucial commercial corridor, providing upcountry access to traffic from Port Qasim and industrial areas of Landhi, Korangi, and Steel Mills. The stone-laying ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Information Minister Muhammad Ahmed Shah, Secretary Works Muhammad Nawaz Sohoo, and other officials.

In addition to the interchange project, the chief minister directed the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) to demolish an under-construction building opposite the Star Gate, highlighting encroachment on the service road. The CM also received updates on the restoration of Chowkandi Graveyard, emphasizing the removal of truck and container parking and the ongoing cleanliness efforts. Plans for developing a park at the Chowkandi Graveyard were discussed, showcasing the government’s commitment to preserving historical and cultural landmarks in the region.
