The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has taken a significant step to enhance travel efficiency by deciding to install Electronic Gates, commonly known as E-gates, at major airports across the country. According to sources, the PCAA has initiated the first phase of the E-gate project at three major international airports: Islamabad International Airport, Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, and Jinnah International Airport in Karachi.
The implementation of this project is being closely supervised by the Aviation Secretary and the Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority (DGCAA). To ensure a comprehensive and well-informed approach, suggestions have been sought from various national institutions, including the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) passports, and FIA immigration.
Upon receiving board approval, tenders will be invited for the E-gate project. The installation of E-gates is expected to streamline and expedite travel processes for passengers. They will no longer need to wait in queues to obtain boarding passes; instead, they can access their boarding cards through the E-gates by scanning their passport and ticket. The system will utilize data embedded in the passport’s biometric chip for authentication.
This technology will provide passengers with a more convenient and efficient international travel experience. The E-gates will perform biometric authentication, which may include facial, fingerprint, iris recognition, or other procedures. Once the authentication is successful, the gate will automatically open for the passenger, simplifying the boarding process and reducing travel-related hassles.
