Pakistan football team set to play first match on Indian Soil Since 2014

Pakistan’s national football team has been issued visas for their upcoming match against India, marking their first match on Indian soil since 2014. The occasion is part of the South Asia Football Federation (SAFF) Championship, where the two neighboring countries will compete against each other.

Political tensions and the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks have limited the frequency of home matches between Pakistan and India in any sport. However, Pakistan’s participation in the Bengaluru event raises hopes for their involvement in the ICC World Cup cricket tournament hosted by India later this year, after earlier threats of a boycott.

Pakistan’s captain, Yousaf Butt, emphasized the power of sports in bridging political boundaries and building strong relationships between nations. The team is determined to deliver a commendable performance and aims to win hearts off the field to ease tensions.

The touring party, consisting of 32 players, received their visas just prior to their departure. The last football match between Pakistan and India took place in 2014, resulting in a draw, while their encounter in the 2018 SAFF Championship saw India emerging as the winner with a 3-1 score.

While football enjoys popularity in both nations, cricket holds greater prominence. Despite the potential revenue from bilateral cricket matches, Pakistan’s last series on home soil against India took place in 2012. The SAFF Championship, featuring eight nations, will commence on Wednesday, with Pakistan placed in Group A alongside India, Kuwait, and Nepal. Group B comprises Lebanon, Maldives, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. The tournament’s final is scheduled for July 4.
