The Karachi Police Chief on Thursday released the monsoon contingency plan. The plan will review the measures taken during the past five monsoon seasons and identify the areas that need attention.
Additional IG Karachi has said that peoples lives and property will be protected at all costs during this year’s rains. The plan has been sent to the DIGs of all zones of the city. DIG Traffic has also been apprised of the plan. The IG said that last year’s monsoon rains caused a lot of devastation in the city and this year, a plan has been put in place preemptively to ensure that the episode is not repeated.
The Additional IG said that it has been decided to establish emergency response centres in every district. Three command and control centres will also be established to monitor urban centres.
The Karachi Police Chief said that the concerned officials have been directed to be in touch with officials from K-Electric, Sui Gas, ambulance and fire brigade services to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Furthermore, department officials have also been told to get in touch with hospitals, doctors and dispensaries in their areas in order to be prepared fr any medical emergencies.
According to the plan, a list of suitable buildings — including educational institutes — to house citizens in case of emergency, should be prepared. Scouts and other volunteers should also be contacted and materials such as dewatering boats should also be procured.
The Additional IG further said that traffic diversion plans are also to be chalked out by each zone. He said that the monsoon plan will be set in motion as soon as the rains begin.
