The local government has taken a significant step towards addressing safety concerns by announcing compensation for citizens who sustain injuries due to accidents involving drains and manholes. Additionally, the government has stated that strict action will be taken against employees responsible for such incidents, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of citizens.
The decision comes in response to a case that was recently heard in the Sindh High Court. The case revolved around the issue of providing safety kits to sentry workers and the potential hazards they face while performing their duties. In a progress report submitted to the court, the local government outlined the measures that have been put in place to enhance safety and accountability.
As part of the comprehensive approach, the local council has been directed to provide safety training to sentry workers, who are often on the front lines of maintaining and safeguarding drainage systems. In a bid to prevent accidents, covers will be installed on all drains, and protective walls will be constructed around them, reducing the risk of citizens accidentally falling into open manholes or drains.
The local government has also outlined a compensation framework aimed at supporting citizens and their families in the event of unfortunate accidents. If a contract employee is injured during the course of their duty, a compensation of 3 lakh rupees will be provided. Furthermore, in cases of injury or death resulting from such accidents, the government has committed to extending compensation to the affected parties. For accidental deaths, relatives of citizens or sentry workers will be able to claim 1 lakh rupees as compensation.
This move holds particular significance as a considerable number of sentry workers are employed on contract and daily wage terms. These workers often perform crucial maintenance tasks but may not fall under the traditional category of government employees.
To ensure transparency and dissemination of information, the Sindh High Court has directed the local government to provide copies of the progress report to all relevant parties.
